Australian businesses will now find it easier to export products duty-free across the Tasman thanks to a cut in red tape.
Amendments to simplify the Rules of Origin under the Australia-New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement were tabled in Parliament today. The Rules of Origin establish the local product content requirements businesses must meet in order for their goods to qualify for tariff-free entry into Australia and New Zealand.
The changes, agreed to by Australian Trade Minister Simon Crean and New Zealand Trade Minister Tim Groser, further strengthen the economic relationship between the two nations.
“These changes make it easier for businesses to benefit from the unique relationship between Australia and New Zealand,” Mr Crean said.
“They bring the agreement with New Zealand into line with our more recent Free Trade Agreements, making it simpler for Australian exporters producing for different markets,” Mr Crean said.
Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr said the new agreement would cut red tape for Australian businesses exporting products to New Zealand.
“This simplification represents an opportunity for local businesses. The Australian Government will work with local businesses to ensure they take maximum advantage of these changes,” Senator Carr said.
The amended agreement, text and Rules of Origin schedule were tabled before the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties and will take effect upon completion of domestic processes in both Australia and New Zealand.
