Altium to Announce Major Export Expansion in China

Sydney developers of electronic design solutions Altium Ltd will announce tomorrow a significant program with the Chinese education sector, and a major initiative to boost innovation in electronics design, at an official ceremony in Shanghai.

Altium’s software, training and solutions are used in the design of electronic products and are well established in China, with more than 300,000 estimated users, as well as 20 locally-authored books on their products available to Chinese higher education students and teachers.

Trade Minister Simon Crean said the new initiatives, which will help Altium extend its market leadership and see improved returns for the company’s products and services, reflect the myriad opportunities available to innovative Australian companies in China, Australia’s largest trading partner.

“China’s economic success story is not just about rapid growth but increasing diversification, and achieving a unique vision for its future.

“The Beijing Olympics just over two weeks away represent an important statement of that vision. From the construction of major Olympics projects to world-leading biodegradable packaging, the Beijing games have been assisted by Australian business expertise.

“Tomorrow’s announcement by Altium further demonstrates how Australian capability can make a significant contribution in the transition from ‘made in China’ to ‘designed in China’, in turn expanding trade and creating jobs for Australians.

“The initiatives also demonstrate how enhancements in intellectual property laws since China’s accession to the World Trade Organization have led to increased opportunities for Australia’s international trade with China. The new partnership will further ensure a proper return for Altium’s investment in product development.

“The improved IP environment has helped Altium further build their presence through investment and collaborative research and development with local Chinese partners. The company will also establish Altium training centres in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Shenzhen, with the aim of training 40,000 engineers over the next 4 years.

“With the resumption of FTA negotiations with China, Australia will continue to pursue outcomes that will foster closer trade in IP related industries and enhance market access for Australian companies.

“Altium will also participate in Austrade’s Business Club Australia, which will harness the excitement and energy of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to showcase Australian business capability in China. It will provide the environment for more businesses like Altium to make deals.

“More than 3000 Australian and Chinese businesspeople are expected to attend events at Business Club Australia. Business Club Australia is the official business program for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, and will use the resources of Austrade’s Chinese network of 15 offices to bring together Australians and key Chinese officials and businesspeople.

“Since its inception at the Sydney Olympics, Business Club Australia has delivered more than A$1.7 billion in trade and investment outcomes for Australia."
