Australia welcomes Iraqi Oil Minister

Minister for Trade Warren Truss today welcomed the first visit to Australia by a Minister of Iraq’s Government of national unity, the Iraqi Minister of Oil, Dr Hussain al-Shahristani.

“Dr al-Shahristani is responsible for a sector crucial to the reconstruction of Iraq. Oil is central to the Iraqi economy. The effective rehabilitation and management of this important industry will be fundamental to Iraq’s recovery,” Mr Truss said today following his meeting with Dr al-Shahristani.

Dr al-Shahristani’s visit has provided a valuable opportunity for Australian industry to highlight the world class expertise which they can bring to assist the Iraqi Government in the rehabilitation of vital oil infrastructure.

“Dr al-Shahristani’s visit has been an opportunity to discuss the strong relationship between Australia and Iraq and the important role Australia is playing in supporting Iraq’s security and reconstruction” Mr Truss said.
