Australian Citrus to China - A $50 Million Market

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade, Mark Vaile today announced that the first shipments of Queensland mandarins had successfully entered China this week representing a major milestone for Australian citrus growers.

"Three shipments of Australian mandarins, from the Greater Burnett region in QLD, are now on sale in Chinese supermarkets, after Chinese customs approved entry of nearly 100,000 kilos of mandarins from Queensland," Mr Vaile said.

An additional 300 000 kilos is expected to arrive before October, marking the creation of new markets and opportunities for Australian citrus growers.

"China's market is potentially worth over $50 million of exports for Australia's citrus growers," said Mr Vaile.

"Next year, industry expects to increase exports of oranges and other citrus fruits from the Riverina and Mallee regions.

After five years of discussions, Australian citrus exports to China have been made possible by the signing of a quarantine protocol in April this year between the Governments of Australia and China. This protocol establishes clear procedures for cooperation between Chinese and Australian customs officials.

Mr Vaile said, "Now that consignments of citrus have successfully entered China's market, the Australian Government's next priority is to establish market access for table grapes, summer fruit and cherries".
