Justice John Lockhart

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Mark Vaile, has paid tribute to former Federal Court Judge Justice John Lockhart, who died late last week.

Justice Lockhart was a distinguished member of the Australian legal fraternity and had also served as a member of the WTO's appellate body since 2001. He was re-appointed to that post last year for a further four-year term.

"Justice Lockhart made an enormous contribution to Australian life through his involvement in law but also on the broader world stage in the WTO and as an Executive Director of the Asian Development Bank," Mr Vaile said.

"He was a Federal Court judge for 20 years and also made a valuable contribution in a number of other Australian and international issues, including through development work with the World Bank.

"His loss will be felt throughout the legal, diplomatic and trade fraternities.

"I held Justice Lockhart in the highest regard and I offer my deepest condolences to his wife Juliet and his family."
