Exports Remain on Upward Trend
The September 2004 International Trade in Goods and Services data shows exports continuing their upward trend, Trade Minister Mark Vaile said today.
“Exports trended upwards for the 14th consecutive month in September, and export growth was balanced with rural, non rural and services exports all contributing to growth,” Mr Vaile said.
“Exports in the September quarter improved 15 per cent on the same quarter last year.
“This reflects the strength of exports to our East Asian trading partners – ASEAN, Japan and China.
“Rural exports rose three per cent in seasonally adjusted terms supported by increased production and higher Australian dollar rural commodity prices.”
Wool and sheepskins were up considerably from the previous month as were cereal grains and meat preparations.
Non-rural good exports were also higher in September, up four per cent on the previous month reflecting increased exports of manufactured goods.
Mr Vaile said strong world economic growth and increased income from tourism saw services exports rise by three per cent.
Australian imports were also growing, reflecting the strength of the Australian economy, along with recent increases in oil prices.
