WTO: Agriculture the Key to Progress

Australia and other Cairns Group members will continue to fight for an ambitious outcome on agriculture in the current round of world trade negotiations, Trade Minister Mark Vaile said today.

Speaking on the release of a statement by the Cairns Group last night, Mr Vaile said an ambitious outcome was essential to securing the benefits of the Doha round of multilateral trade negotiations through the World Trade Organisation.

The Cairns Group has again emphasised this message in our response to a recent letter from US Trade Representative, Robert Zoellick, laying out US ideas for the way forward for the Round," Mr Vaile said.

"I have already written to Bob Zoellick welcoming his letter's strong and clear signal that the US is committed to the successful conclusion of the round.

"The Cairns Group will continue to press for an outcome on agriculture that is in keeping with the high level of ambition we set for ourselves in Doha at the launch of this round more than two years ago -and we will continue to work hard to achieve that outcome.

"I will be discussing strategies to accelerate progress in agriculture with other Ministers from Cairns Group countries when we meet in Costa Rica from 23-25 February."
