Another Win for Australian Coal Exports to Mexico
A $158 million contract awarded to Glencore International to supply thermal coal to Mexico, reflected the excellent international reputation Australian coal enjoyed, Trade Minister Mark Vaile said today.
Glencore International won the contract to supply 2.77 million tonnes of thermal coal to a Mexican power plant. It is the second time in six months the company has secured a contract issued by the Mexican Federal Electricity Commission.
“Australian coal is known for its quality, reliability and timeliness of supply,” Mr Vaile said
“This contract represents a further boost to Australia’s growing exports to Mexico. Two-way trade between Mexico and Australia has doubled over the past five years to $1 billion.
“The increasingly diverse and dynamic relationship between Australia and Mexico offers enormous opportunities for Australian business.
“Mexico’s plan to expand its coal-fired power generation capabilities, is expected to see prospects for Australian coal exports improve further in the comingyears.”
The first shipment by Glencore International is expected to arrive in Mexico today, with the coal being supplied from Mount Owen in the Hunter Valley region. The contract is significant in terms of coal supplied from Newcastle.
