Australia Strengthens E-Commerce Ties with Japan
Australia and Japan last night signed an agreement on an enhanced framework for cooperation in information and communications technology (ICT) and e-commerce.
Trade Minister Mark Vaile and the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Daryl Williams, welcomed the signing.
"This framework recognises the rapid change and development in the information technology, telecommunications and information services industries," Mr Williams said.
"It identifies several areas of common interest and cooperation between Australia and Japan and reflects the commitment both countries have to the development of their ICT and e-commerce sectors."
The framework will improve arrangements for cross-border recognition of digital certificates, promoting trust and certainty in online transactions, promoting e-government, improving broadband access and addressing digital divide issues.
"The Australia-Japan Trade and Economic Framework identified information and communications technology and e-commerce as a particular area in which our two countries could increase cooperation," Mr Vaile said.
"The ICT framework is one of a number of positive outcomes that have emerged from the Trade and Economic Framework. It will bring concrete benefits to our trade and economic relationship with Japan."
