Despite our best efforts - access to medicines is not resolved
Trade Minister Mark Vaile today expressed his regret that a final
resolution of the issue of access to medicines for poor countries
had not been reached in the WTO by the end of year deadline agreed
by trade ministers at last years WTO Ministerial meeting in Doha.
"Since I hosted, the Sydney meeting of WTO trade ministers in November,
major progress has been made on this complex and sensitive issue
with all elements of a solution now agreed except for the scope of
disease coverage." Mr Vaile said.
However, despite their best efforts and intensive talks amongst
WTO members a resolution to the final sticking point has yet to be
found.
"I spoke to United States Trade Representative, Bob Zoellick and
WTO Director General, Dr Supachai late last night in an effort to
find a last minute solution." Mr Vaile said.
"I now expect and very much hope that all WTO members will resume
their efforts in the new year to resolve this very important issue."
Mr Vaile concluded by saying that, "Australia remained fully committed
to finding a solution to this important issue."
