A Strong Year for Coal Exports
Australia's coal exports reached a record $13.4
billion in 2001-02, Trade Minister Mark Vaile announced today.
"Coal exports increased by 24 per cent in 2001-02
with Japan ($5.9 billion), Korea ($1.3 billion), India ($1.1 billion),
Taiwan ($854 million) and the Netherlands ($454 million) Australia's
major markets," Mr Vaile said.
The 2001-02 figures are included in the Department
of Foreign Affairs and Trade publication Composition of Trade,
Australia, 2001-02, released today.
"Exports of total goods
and services fell marginally to $152.2 billion in 2001-02 - a good
result, given the slowing global economy
which has affected some key Australian export markets," Mr Vaile said.
"Merchandise exports rose one per cent to $121.2
billion. Iron ore exports rose five per cent to $5.2 billion, exceeding
$5 billion for the first time, and wheat exports, rose by 10 per cent
to $4.5 billion. Wine exports also performed strongly, rising by
19 per cent to $2.3 billion.
"Exports of business services performed strongly,
rising by nine per cent to $3.5 billion, mainly due to strong growth
in exports of professional services.
"Exports of manufactures rose one per cent during
the year and have grown at an average annual rate of eight per cent
over the last five years."
Composition of Trade, Australia, 2001-02, provides a comprehensive analysis of the growth, direction and commodity
breakdown of Australia's merchandise exports in recent years, as well
as overall details of services trade.
Individual reports detail composition of merchandise trade with Australia's
