Australian Exporters Benefit from Leather Tariff Cut
Australian exporters of high quality tanned cow leather stand to
benefit from Poland's decision to reduce to zero a three per cent
tariff, Trade Minister Mark Vaile said today.
"Poland's decision is an excellent outcome for Australian exporters
and establishes a level playing field with EU competitors," Mr Vaile
said.
"Intensive lobbying by our embassy in Warsaw and my department resulted
in the reduction of this tariff from seven to three per cent at the
beginning of this year. Continued high-level representations has
resulted in Poland's decision to reduce the remaining tariff to zero
which shows appreciation of the commercial benefits for Poland and
Australia.
"Australia produces a high-quality, competitive product and is renowned
for being a reliable supplier.
"The tariff cut gives exporters an opportunity to further develop
their business in Poland with more confidence. The upholstered furniture
manufacturing industry in Poland is a growing, lucrative market with
other countries in the region taking an interest in developing this
sector."
The zero tariff will apply until the end of the year and the Government
is working with Polish authorities to have this rolled over for 2003.
"Assuming this rollover takes place, it will give Australian exporters
time to establish themselves in the market prior to Poland's expected
entry into the EU in 2004," Mr Vaile said.
"Increasing exports of Australian furniture leather to Poland through
the elimination of the remaining tariff is a current priority of the
Market Development Group - a whole of government approach to securing
bilateral trade outcomes for Australian business.
"Our success in lobbying for the reduction of this tariff is another
example of government/industry cooperation and the capability of Australian
exporters to participate directly in negotiations for freer market
access."
The Government is currently engaged in consulting with the Textiles
Clothing and Footwear industry and other relevant stakeholders in
the preparation and development of Australia's negotiating position
for the World Trade Organisation negotiations on freeing up market
access.
"The Doha Round of trade negotiations will present a further opportunity
for TCF exporters to gain better market access," Mr Vaile said.
