United Arab Emirates - Australia Air Services Agreement Signed
in Dubai on 8 September 2002
The Minister of Communications of the United Arab Emirates, HE Ahmed
Humaid Al Tayer, and the Australian Minister for Trade, The Hon Mark
Vaile MP, signed a bilateral air services agreement today on behalf
of the Governments of the United Arab Emirates and Australia.
Today's action formalises the agreement initialed in Canberra, on
the 3rd of November 1999 during discussions between the
Aeronautical Authorities of the two countries. The provisions of this
Agreement are being provisionally applied and will enter into force
upon an exchange of diplomatic notes confirming that each country
has completed its domestic treaty ratification procedures.
The Air Services Agreement will help to further develop the existing
close ties between Australia and the United Arab Emirates. It includes
both passenger and cargo flights, and allows carriers from both countries
to operate agreed services to each country. It provides a framework
for the introduction of additional passenger and freight services
between Australia and the United Arab Emirates.
Air links between our two countries have increased substantially
over the past few years. Currently, there are many direct and non-direct
services between the two countries. Emirates, one of the designated
airlines of the UAE, is the only designated airline to offer direct
services between the two countries. Currently Emirates offer daily
services to Melbourne and four services per week to Sydney and Perth.
The Perth service, which was introduced in August, is the only non-stop
service connecting Australia and the Middle East.
The growth in air services between Australia and the United Arab
Emirates has brought a range of benefits. It facilitates tourism,
education exchanges, and transport of high value airfreight between
the two countries. The ease of movement between Australia and the
United Arab Emirates has led to a greater understanding of each other's
country, through growing trade, cultural and political exchanges.
To further strengthen links between our countries, we have the pleasure
of announcing the Australian Government's decision to increase the
frequencies available to Emirates for services to Sydney. This will
enable Emirates to operate daily services between Dubai and Australia's
major international gateway.
