Primary Producers to Benefit from Mexican Tariff Cuts
Exporters of coal, wool and live cattle to Mexico will realise an
immediate benefit following a Mexican Government decision to remove
a 'temporary' tariff on commodities and rural products, Mr Vaile said
today.
Mr Vaile said the removal of the three per cent tariff, in place
since 1999, will apply immediately to almost half of Australia's $476
million exports to Mexico.
"The tariff cut equates to a saving of at least $4 million a year
on coal alone, based on current figures, and could lead to further
expansion for coal exports," Mr Vaile said.
"This decision is also a welcome boost for Australia's cattle and
wool industries, which are important exports to Mexico."
"In May this year, during a visit to Mexico, I received a good hearing
from my Mexican counterparts when I raised Australia's concern over
the 'temporary' tariff with them.
"The tariff removal is an excellent outcome for Australian exporters
and demonstrates growing cooperation between Australia and Mexico,
as well as our commitment to removing trade barriers."
Mexico is the world's ninth-largest economy, the largest economy
in Latin America and Australia's largest trading partner in Latin
America.
