Steel and Jobs - Winners from latest US Exclusion
The Australian steel industry is set to benefit from the lifting
of US restrictions on Australian-made hydraulic hose couplings, Trade
Minister Mark Vaile said today.
Mr Vaile said hydraulic hose couplings, manufactured by Melbourne-based
RYCO Hydraulics Pty Ltd, are the latest addition to the list of exclusions
of Australian steel from the United States Section 201 Safeguard Measures
on imports of certain steel products.
"The overnight win for RYCO Hydraulics follows two other exclusions
secured in the last couple of months," Mr Vaile said.
"Over 85% of Australia's steel exports to the US are now excluded
from the Bush Administration's imposition of tariffs.
"The Government will continue to pursue its objective of improved
Australian companies access to the US steel market and will work closely
with affected Australian companies.
"We will continue to work within the WTO rules based system to ensure
Australia's steel industry is not denied access to the US market.
"The United States is the world's biggest market and today's announcement
will benefit RYCO by preserving the niche market it has found in the
US for its unique products.
"RYCO began selling its couplings and hose in the US in July 2001.
The company expects a sales target in the US which will be in the
millions of dollars, ensuring job security for its 250 employees,"
Mr Vaile said.
