Vaile to Visit Malaysia for Trade and Investment Talks
Trade Minister Mark Vaile will look to further facilitate trade and
investment between Australia and Malaysia when he visits from 27-29
July.
Mr Vaile will co-chair the Australia-Malaysia Joint Trade Committee
with Malaysia’s Minister for International Trade and Industry, YB
Dato’ Seri Rafidah Aziz on 27-28 July and will meet with Malaysia’s
Minister for Agriculture, YB Datuk Effendi Norwawi, and participate
in the annual joint meeting of the Australia-Malaysia Business Council
and the Malaysia-Australia Business Council on 29 July.
An Australian business delegation, organised by Austrade and the
Australia-Malaysia Business Council, will accompany Mr Vaile to Malaysia.
The delegation will be looking to build on links between the Australian
and Malaysian food industries.
“The Joint Trade Committee meeting and business mission will underline
the significant benefits to producers and consumers in Australia and
Malaysia which exist as a result of the close trading relationship
between our countries,” Mr Vaile said.
“Australia's exports of goods and services to Malaysia have risen
over the last four years, and two-way trade has recovered to pre-Asian
crisis levels.
“A key part of my visit will be a 19-member ‘Partnership in Food
Mission’ made up of representatives from Australian firms across the
agribusiness industry.
“This sector of Australian industry is noted for its ability to take
an innovative approach and I expect the mission to be successful in
building links between the Australian and Malaysian food processing
sectors, especially in areas such as food technology, manufacturing
and health-related systems, training, logistics, and supply chain
management.”
Two-way trade in goods and services was worth about $A8.1 billion
in 2001 placing the trading relationship with Malaysia 10th overall.
Goods and services exports to Malaysia were worth about $A3.4 billion
in 2001 making it Australia’s 12th largest export market. Major exports
included copper, aluminium, agriculture and food (milk and cream),
non monetary gold, medicaments, education and tourism.
