Australian Minister for Trade, Mark Vaile
Friday, 10 August 2001 / MVT107/2001
Australia-Malaysia Joint Trade Committee Meeting
Trade Minister Mark Vaile will join Malaysia's Minister for International Trade and Industry, YB Dato' Seri Rafidah Aziz, for the 9th meeting of the Australia-Malaysia Joint Trade Committee in Perth on 13-14 August.
"I look forward to co-chairing the meeting with my Malaysian counterpart, Rafidah Aziz," Mr Vaile said.
"The Joint Trade Committee meetings with Malaysia generally take place on an annual basis - the last meeting was held in Kuala Lumpur in December 2000.
"These meetings provide an opportunity to review bilateral trade relations, consider ways to strengthen cooperation on trade-related issues to our mutual benefit, and identify the scope for cooperation on the regional and multilateral trade agenda."
"I consider a particularly useful component of the talks is the opportunity they provide for representatives of business from both countries to present their views on business priorities for government consideration.
"I expect discussion on the scope for cooperation in regional and multilateral trade fora will assume added importance at this year's meeting."
NB: Minister Vaile and Minister Rafidah will hold a joint media conference at 12 noon on 14 August in the Duxton Function Room Three, Lower Level, Duxton Hotel, 1 St. George's Terrace, Perth.
