Exports to Europe Continue to Grow
The good news is contained in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade publication Australia's Trade with the European Union, 2000 released today.
"Exports to most European countries recorded growth in 2000, with the strongest growth being recorded for Greece (up 260 per cent), Denmark (up 109 per cent), Finland (up 92 per cent) and the Netherlands (up 88 per cent)," Mr Vaile said.
"Increased exports of both ferries and metal ores were significant factors behind the strong growth recorded for these countries.
"The United Kingdom remained Australia's largest trading partner within the EU, accounting for 30 per cent of total exports, valued at $3.8 billion.
"A significant contributor to export growth has been the area of manufactures, increasing by 13 per cent to $4.0 billion in 2000. Exports of medical goods such as antibiotics increased by 77 per cent to $561 million, transport equipment rose by 10 per cent to $365 million, and scientific equipment rose by 36 per cent to $284 million. Exports of electrical equipment and aircraft parts also performed strongly in 2000, with both growing by 17 per cent.
"Exports of services to the EU from Australia accounted for close to one fifth of Australia's total services exports in 2000. Taken as a single entity, the EU is Australia's largest trading partner."
Australia's Trade with the European Union, 2000 provides a comprehensive analysis of the growth, direction and composition of Australia's merchandise and services trade with the EU and the European Free Trade Association. Graphical comparisons of major economic indicators are also featured.
