Minister launches 'Ballarat Exporting to the World'

Federal Trade Minister Mark Vaile highlighted the key role exports play in underwriting Australia's high living standards when he officially launched Ballarat - Exporting to the World (BETW) in Melbourne earlier today.

Speaking at the launch Mr Vaile outlined the vital contribution exports make to the standard of living enjoyed by all Australians - especially in regional Australia.

'Exports account for 20 per cent of Gross Domestic Produce (GDP) and one-in-five jobs nationally. In regional Australia export industries account for one-in-four jobs," Mr Vaile said.

'Ballarat- Exporting to the World carries my full endorsement. It's a prime example of how regional communities can work cooperatively to encourage, support and applaud local businesses in exporting.

'Ballarat's business expansion, community development and general employment have all been strengthened due to the increase in export business in the region."

BETW was created by the Ballarat export community to showcase the region's export culture, help current and potential exporters access global markets and recognise and honour local exporters.

The launch - held at the Victorian Government Investment Centre - was attended by the Ballarat's export business community representing a wide range of industries and embody the export excellence for which Victoria is renown.

Other speakers at the launch included John Brumby MP, Treasurer and Minister for State and Regional Development, Michael Ronaldson MP for Ballarat and Charles Jamieson, Managing Director, Austrade.

BETW is organised by the Victorian Employer's Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Australian Industry Group; City of Ballarat; Department of State and Regional Development; Australian Institute of Export; Ballarat Courier Newspaper; Bendigo Bank; and Austrade through the Ballarat TradeStart office.
