Philippines Trade Dispute Resolved

The Minister for Trade, Mr Vaile, announced today that following discussions last week with Edgardo Angara, the Secretary for Agriculture of the Philippines, Australia and the Philippines have resolved their differences over agricultural trade.

Mr Vaile said the Philippines has agreed that bilateral agricultural trade, including the live cattle trade, will be returned to normal.

Australia has agreed to commence an import risk analysis (IRA) for Philippine bananas and in a few months time a "generic" or global IRA for pineapples, which would include pineapples from the Philippines.

Both Ministers have agreed to encourage business communities in both countries to broaden and deepen the bilateral trade relationship.

Mr Vaile said the successful outcome demonstrates that the best way to resolve trade differences is through constructive dialogue and bilateral cooperation.

He emphasised that the agreement maintains the credibility of Australia's quarantine system. Both IRAs will follow the established process of scientific analysis which provides ample opportunity for stakeholder comment.

Mr Vaile also looked forward to continuing close cooperation with the Philippines on multilateral trade issues, including in the Cairns Group.
