1999 Export Awards Finalists

Trade Minister, Mark Vaile, this morning congratulated 60 outstanding Australian exporters selected as National Finalists in the 1999 Australian Export Awards.

Speaking at a breakfast in Parliament House, Mr Vaile said the finalists exemplified the diversity, ingenuity and adaptability of Australia's export community.

"The list includes manufacturers of everything from furniture, pavers and barbecues to dental products, automotive components and high?speed ferries. There are producers of fine wines and pharmaceuticals, television programs and tourism services, and developers of software for education, entertainment and the mining sector."

Mr Vaile said the finalists are drawn from all parts of Australia, from Busselton in Western Australia to Bowral in NSW and from Berrimah in the Northern Territory to Westbury in Tasmania.

"The performance of these companies is a role model for Australian business," he said.

"They demonstrate that through innovation, flexibility, commitment and sheer hard work, Australian companies can compete, and win, in the international marketplace."

"This ability to compete internationally has never been more important to Australia's economic welfare than it is today, with our exporters contributing roughly 20 per cent of our GDP and generating one?in?five Australian jobs."

The 1999 Export Awards program will culminate in the presentation of the "Australian Exporter of the Year" and export category award winners at a Gala Presentation Dinner at the Crown Towers Entertainment Complex in Melbourne on December 1, where the Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard, will be guest of honour.
