AUSTRALIAN MINISTER FOR TRADE

MARK VAILE

MVT43/99 21 October 1999

Healthy Signs for Exports of Manufactured Goods to the Americas

Trade Minister, Mark Vaile, today said manufactured exports to the Americas continued to perform strongly, showing fast growth rates.

"Since 1993, exports of manufactured products to the Americas have grown at almost 14 per cent per year, to over $4.6 billion in 1998," Mr Vaile said,

"Even higher growth rates have been achieved for elaborately transformed manufactures, with strong performances in exports of goods such as aircraft and equipment, motor vehicles and associated parts and accessories, and telecommunications equipment.

"While the United States dominates our export market in the Americas, markets in other parts of the region also performed well. For example, merchandise exports to Brazil, the largest market in South America, increased by 10 per cent, while export trade to Mexico grew 84 per cent," Mr Vaile said.

Mr Vaile's comments follow today's release of "Australia's Trade with the Americas, 1998", published by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
