New Chilled Pork Initiative in Singapore

Trade Minister, Mark Vaile, will tomorrow launch a new promotion aimed at further boosting consumption of Australian pork in Singapore.

In Singapore as part of a five-day trade mission to Singapore and Japan, Minister Vaile will launch the promotion that will see Singapore's army enjoying high-quality Australian pork.

" The high regard for Australian chilled pork in Singapore has once again been affirmed in a decision by Singapore's Armed Forces (SAF) to allow a three month promotion of the product to 40,000 Singaporean soldiers," Mr Vaile said.

The Singapore Food Industries (SFI) chilled pork promotion will start on October 5, and will see Asian and Western pork dishes served in at least 40 local army camps. Specialist chefs will prepare the nutritious and tasty pork dishes.

Mr Vaile said the SFI Australian chilled pork promotion was being organised by SFI and the Confederation of Australian Pork Exporters (CAPE).

"SFI is the largest single importer of Australian chilled pork in Singapore. SFI's impressive importing, processing and distribution infrastructure ensures that the chilled pork is kept at a controlled temperature from the time it is slaughtered right up until the time it is purchased by the consumer.

"We're very pleased the SAF has given the go-ahead for a three-month promotion because it has strict quality control guidelines for all foodstuffs and insists on high quality, nutritious and extremely fresh produce for its personnel," Mr Vaile said.

"Australian suppliers are working very closely with the Singapore food authorities, market distributors and retailers to raise awareness of the wholesomeness of Australian chilled pork, and its ready adaptability to the discerning standards of the Singapore consumer.

"The strong demand for Australian chilled pork here has seen daily imports increase from 45 tonnes per day in July to current levels of 70 tonnes and we would expect this trend to continue," Mr Vaile said.
