Australia Welcomes Amman Economic Summit

The Minister for Trade, Senator Bob McMullan, said today Australia warmly welcomes the Middle East/North Africa Economic Summit being held in Amman from 29-31 October.

Australia has a substantial delegation at the Summit, led by the Special Trade Representative, Mr John Button.

The delegation includes senior Government and industry representatives.

Senator McMullan said the Amman Summit should provide a crucial boost to promote economic cooperation in the region, thereby advancing the Middle East peace process and helping to normalise regional relations.

"One objective of the Summit is to promote moderation, negotiation and cooperation as the best means to resolve regional differences," Senator McMullan said.

"A major objective of Australia's participation in the Summit will be to promote Australian expertise in relevant sectors. "For instance, Australia has special expertise in water resources technology and management, which has a high development priority for the region.

"High-level participation in the Amman Economic Summit is a further step in the Government's efforts to expand Australia's commercial links with the region," Senator McMullan said.
