NTIOC BIGGER AND BETTER IN 1995 - McMULLAN

The Federal Government will host about 200 key international business leaders and up to 1200 other delegates at the National Trade and Investment Outlook (NTIOC) conference in Melbourne from December 4-6, the Minister for Trade, Senator Bob McMullan, said today.

"With the backing of the Government and industry, NTIOC has become one of the major international business forums in the Asia-Pacific region," Senator McMullan said.

"NTIOC provides a forum for key business executives from around Australia and the region to exchange information and ideas and to do business.

"The result is new global business opportunities for Australian companies and their regional counterparts.

"An independent survey conducted after last year's conference, and subsequent feedback from Australian overseas missions, indicates that flow-on business from NTIOC was worth many hundreds of millions of dollars."

The 1994 NTIOC Conference was attended by 1300 people, including specially-hosted international delegations. One country's delegation estimated that new business worth $500 million over five years could result from last year's conference

Senator McMullan said that feedback from the international delegates indicates how impressed they are with Australia's approach to doing business in Asia.

"It is particularly pleasing that international business visitors left NTIOC'94 with a greater understanding and appreciation of the level of technological innovation in Australia's manufacturing and services industry.

"And, significantly, the survey shows how serious the visiting delegations are about doing business with Australia," Senator McMullan said.

"Many of the international participants at NTIOC'94 have made return visits to Australia to pursue business opportunities identified at the time."

NTIOC'95 is focusing on nine key markets: Brazil, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, People's Republic of China, The Philippines, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Nine key industry sectors will be featured at NTIOC'95:

- building and construction

- food processing and distribution

- global financial services

- health services and medical equipment

- mining technology, services and equipment

- information services - multimedia, information technology and software

- telecommunications

- and transport infrastructure (ports, roads, aviation, rail).

NTIOC'95 will also include special sessions on regional development and Northern Australia.
